The Story That Life Creates

The Story That Life Creates

July 5, 2025

In the US this is a very important weekend. Friday was July 4th – Independence Day. It’s also the weekend we chose to move across the state. Again. About a year ago we left the central Texas area to make a temporary move to Abilene. Now that our reason for moving there has ended we are headed back to the Austin area. Back home.

This is also the weekend that the weather decided to create one of the area’s worst disasters in decades. And we were moving in the middle of it. We got through it with some close calls. But we are back in our house in Georgetown. Others were not so fortunate.

Life created a story for us this weekend. Kids helping us move. The two man moving crew that went above and beyond, driving through dangerous flooding to unload our truck. And several counties away were the many people who died or are missing in this flood.

Every business and every individual has a story. Life adds to that story from time to time. It added to ours today. We were carrying cash during the move to pay for various things. My wife told me that she had somehow lost $200. We were upset about it of course. But then after we thought about it we decided that considering what was going on around us, maybe someone who really needed it might have found that money. Suddenly the money didn’t seem all that important to us anymore. We let it go.

Then at dinner tonight my wife picked up her purse and said “Look what I found.” She was holding the lost money. Only it wasn’t $200 like we thought. It Was $320. The interesting thing was, letting go of that money when we thought it was lost was a better feeling than when we found it.

We realize that letting it go was a lesson. Sometimes letting things go brings more to you. That holds true in business. Letting go of past mistakes and failures is important for a successful business. Those mistakes and failures are part of your business’ story. But whether they’re a positive part of the story depends on whether or not you are willing to let it go. Letting go does an amazing thing for your mind. It frees your mind to think and create. It declutters your mind and gives you a much more positive mindset. We all need that!

I hope all of you have a great holiday weekend and a happy July 4th! See you next week.

Opportunities In West Texas June 28, 2025 This week I’m writing from west Texas. I’m in the Permian Basin meeting with a friend and real estate investor client to look at properties. Why go to west Texas to look for real estate investments? Opportunity. First, I believe Texas is probably the best state for real estate investing. The tax situation, the political climate, the incredible growth, and the pro-business attitudes all combine to create a an amazing investment atmosphere. This is not...

People Friction June 21, 2025 We recently took a survey of business owners at a business expo in the Dallas area. We asked what the biggest challenges were for their business. The top two answers were: Owner Reliance: The owner did so much of the work that the business could not run without the owner. Read my earlier article on that topic here. People Friction: There was always some kind of problem between the employees, with the employees, or between the employees and the owner, etc. The...

A Week With Grandkids-And Other Business Lessons June 14, 2025 This past week we had grandkids staying at our house. Without parents. Just us. Yeah. A week with two children, 7 and 10, 24 hours a day for seven days. Here’s how it went. Drive a 7 hour round trip to pick them up. A day at the splash pad. A day at the park. A day at the museum. A day at the zoo. Endless episodes of Phineas and Ferb. Shopping. Trying to guess what they would eat. Then a sad 7 hour round trip drive to take them...
