Is A Vacation Wasting Time?

Is A Vacation Wasting Time?

August 23, 2025

This week I am sharing this article written by my favorite guest writer- my wife Ericka. This is from her weekly newsletter Leadership Mastermind. If you would like to subscribe to her newsletter (I recommend it!) reply to this email and let me know. I'll add you to her email list.

Are You Running On Empty?

Have you ever tried to pour from an empty cup?

Of course not - it’s impossible.

But in leadership, many of us try to do just that.

We push through exhaustion, skip breaks, and tell ourselves “I’ll rest later.”

The problem is, “later” rarely comes.

And eventually, our leadership suffers - not because we don’t care, but because we’ve run dry.

Recently I had a coaching session with a client who had just returned from vacation.

A real vacation. She and her family went on a cruise, unplugged, experienced new things, and simply enjoyed being together and having some time alone.

She shared with me something that stood out: “I feel like I’m getting more done faster now.”

It struck me how often we underestimate the power of rest.

We think stepping away will slow us down, when in reality it can reset our perspective, refresh our energy, and allow us to return with more focus and clarity.

Leadership is demanding.

There will always be deadlines, projects, and people who need us.

But here’s the truth: you can’t lead well if you’re running on empty.

Your team feels your energy - whether it’s depleted or renewed.

Sometimes the most “productive” thing we can do is to step away, refill our cup, and come back ready to give our best.

So, let me ask you:
When was the last time you truly unplugged?
What’s one small step you can take this week to refill your own cup?

Because your team can’t draw from a cup that’s dry.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.” - Unknown

Yours in Growth,

Ericka

That's it for this time. See you next week!

76 Million Retiring Boomers & You March 7, 2026 There are 76 million Baby Boomers in the US and they have been retiring at an impressive rate. But only about 10% have retired. That’s a small number. In less than 5 years all Boomers will have reached the age of 65. Of course not everyone will automatically retire at 65. Some will never retire either by choice or out of necessity. This massive number of retirees creates an opportunity for younger buyers as well as for Boomers. Uncertain Exit...

What Value Do You Provide? February 27, 2026 “We're all equal as souls, but we are not equal in the marketplace.” That quote came from Jim Rohn. Early in Tony Robbins’ career when he was very young, he worked for Jim Rohn. One day he was complaining about how someone made tens of millions of dollars when he sold his business and how unfair it was that a lot of people are starving and hurting and not making money and this guy made millions selling his business. And then Jim Rohn answered back...

Know When To Walk Away February 20, 2026 #2 From the “Things I’ve Learned In Business” series. As business owners we spend a lot of time and energy making things work. We work on our business. We work on deal making. We analyze, calculate, contemplate, and discuss ourselves to death on the final decision of whatever project we happen to be working on. Was it worth it? There is a statement, a philosophy really, that I have come to believe in. “If it is meant to be it will happen.” I have used...
