Are You A BOBO?
September 26, 2025
Does this sound familiar? You feel like you and your business are stuck. You are exhausted, frustrated, and overwhelmed. There’s too much chaos in your business and with your team. You, your team, and your business are underperforming. Your personal relationships are strained because you’re at work all the time, even when you’re not at work. You aren’t sleeping well and you are irritable. You my friend are on the road to burnout.
So what in the world is a B.O.B.O.? It’s a Burned Out Business Owner. If you’re experiencing some or all of those symptoms you are either on the way there or you are already experiencing business owner burnout.
It's Sneaky
In 2022 the daily newsletter The Hustle did a survey of 300 entrepreneurs and found that 68% of them were experiencing burnout. That’s a ridiculous number. How did we let this happen? It sneaks up on you. It starts out when the business is just getting started. You do whatever it takes to keep the doors open and start to grow. And then it does grow. But by then you just can’t let go. You’re hooked on doing it all.
Not So Cool
For those entrepreneurs out there who think the grind is cool and you can endure it now and worry about relaxing later, take a good look at the picture at the top of this page. That’s you if you don’t get it under control. And it’s not just men who work this way. I have a female version of that picture as well. And we have in fact had female clients who were experiencing burnout.
Not That Easy
It can be a fairly complex problem. It’s not just a matter of learning to delegate as some would have you believe. There are team dynamics and dysfunctions involved here, along with some ego issues, much needed mindset adjustments, and definitely leadership problems. Leadership at the top and within the team are crucial in solving the owner burnout problem. So just passing off a few tasks to employees isn’t the answer. A lot more work is needed.
You should be able to take up to 30 days off and the business continue to run the same as if you hadn’t left. A business owner should not have to do more than 25% of the tasks required to keep the business operational and running smoothly. If someone were looking at your business to buy they would expect no less.
If you’re starting to dread Monday morning maybe it’s time to look for some solutions before it goes too far.
Action Steps You Can Take To Start:
1. Admit that you are getting burned out.
2. Make the decision to take action.
3. Create time to think. Add margins to your schedule- add time between scheduled activities. Use that down time to reset yourself.
