The Power Of Referrals

#4 From “The Things I’ve learned In Business” series.

Referrals are one of those things that is often forgotten when entrepreneurs market their businesses. It’s not flashy or impressive when you tell someone your business is successful mostly because of referrals. We want to talk instead about the brilliant job we did in creating our latest sales funnel or about our YouTube channel running 24 hours a day sending us customers. But it’s still true that many if not most of small business customers come from someone recommending the business.

Here are 2 examples of referrals. One is kind of silly and did not make us any money. But it did bring us some laughter and enjoyment. The second example was a real business referral that did make us money- a lot of it.

Ducks!

My wife and I were in the park one day with a couple of grandkids feeding the ducks at the river. One lone duck came over to us and waited for food. We tossed it several items to eat and it swam away. It went across the river to a large rock where several of his duck friends were relaxing in the sun. He made some noise, several loud quacks and then turned around and swam back toward us with all his duck buddies following close behind. They swam up to us and sat there staring, waiting for us to throw them some food. What started as 1 duck food customer suddenly became a dozen duck food customers. We became successful duck food providers because of one duck’s referral. The grandkids loved it, and we loved it.

A Sale

The second example was an experience I had in real estate. A large company in our town had a small building they needed to sell. It was an old vacant convenience store they had bought to turn into offices. For whatever reason they decided to abandon the project and sell the building. Nobody else in our office wanted the listing so I took it. It was only a $100K property. I sold it pretty quick and the transaction went through with no issues. The representative from the company that I worked with was a low to mid-management employee. We worked well together and completed a successful deal.

About a year later the family that owned the company (they made up most of the C-suite level execs) wanted a new company facility and headquarters. So the person I worked with on the small convenience store building recommended me to represent them. The end result was a $10 million transaction that paid a multiple 6 figure commission. That happened because of the referral from that one guy on a small transaction that nobody else wanted.

You Could Be One Referral Away!

That taught me to never underestimate what one referral can do for your business. And just like with the hungry duck one referral can multiply into a dozen customers overnight. No matter how many flashy funnels we create, or how much social media marketing we do, it can still come down to someone telling their friends and coworkers about your business and your product. Keep doing the all those things but don’t forget to go for the referrals as well. Sometimes you just have to ask for it.

By the way, I would appreciate a referral for my newsletter!

A Change Of Plans June 12, 2026 Don't forget you can read past articles by Clicking Here A Change Of Plans Long term planning is obsolete. Or maybe I should say how we define Long Term is no longer accurate. As business owners and entrepreneurs planning is a way of life. I’ve always been a big fan of having a plan. Whenever I invested in real estate I always had a plan for what I would do with it(renovations, tenants, lease, etc.), how long I would keep it, and when I would sell and for how...

Consistency Creates Momentum June 6, 2026 It’s amazing how many times I have let this lesson go by without acting on it. I’m sure there are a lot of business owners out there who have done the same thing. At least I like to think I’m not the only one. I’m sure you know how it goes. We start with the intention of taking the necessary action every day and being consistent and persistent, because that’s how momentum builds. But something happens and we get distracted and consistent turns into...

Outsourcing Creating To One Of Our Creations May 29, 2026 I was reading one of my favorite newsletters today called Oberthinking by Justin Oberman. The article was called “How I use AI To Think Better”. It caught my attention because I’ve been using AI a lot lately to help with the development of a certification program. One of the points he made had to do with using AI to write. Lately I’ve been trying to put into words how AI is affecting people and the way we think and create. A Result I...
