Consistency Creates Momentum: Observations From The Bird Diner

Consistency Creates Momentum

June 6, 2026

It’s amazing how many times I have let this lesson go by without acting on it. I’m sure there are a lot of business owners out there who have done the same thing. At least I like to think I’m not the only one. I’m sure you know how it goes. We start with the intention of taking the necessary action every day and being consistent and persistent, because that’s how momentum builds. But something happens and we get distracted and consistent turns into intermittent and then occasional and then finally surrender.

Back To The Bird Diner
I guess what we all need are real life illustrations and examples to hit us in the face. I’ve mentioned before that my wife Ericka has a bird feeder. Actually she has acquired more bird feeders. It's now officially a hobby. I’ve been observing this as if it were a business. She started with one feeder and attracted more birds than the one feeder could handle. The birds discover the feeder and they bring back more birds. So our bird feeding business has grown from referrals. But it was too crowded and they started fighting over the food and the little birds were being pushed out. So she added more feeders including those designed for different types of birds like smaller birds. Now we have enough space to accommodate everyone. And it spawned a side business- Rabbits! The birds are sloppy eaters so they spill food onto the ground. The rabbits come and graze on the spilled bird food along with even more birds that prefer to eat on the ground. And every morning we look out to see all types of birds waiting for Ericka to come out and fill the feeders.

Consistency

So where does the lesson in consistency come in? We took a weekend trip this last weekend. Ericka filled up the bird feeders as usual and we left for the weekend. We knew the feeders would get emptied out before we got back but there was no other option. When we got home all the feeders were empty and the water bowl was dry. We filled everything up that evening and fully expected to see all our “customers” back the next morning. But that didn’t happen. I looked out the window to an empty yard. No birds. No rabbits. Complete silence. One day of breaking the consistent routine killed our momentum.

It's A Commitment

All the online marketing experts preach consistency in marketing and content. YouTube works better with regular consistent uploads. Podcasts work better when you have a consistent schedule and consistently post about them on social media. But very few of us actually do it. Maybe because some people need to see an illustration and real life examples for themselves. Not just hear about it but actually see it. That’s what the birds did for me. They showed me how important consistency and persistence actually are. Important business operations like marketing, investing, building referrals, can be slow and people have a short attention span. So we lose consistency. The Bird Diner allows me to see all those operations accelerated and condensed. But…is consistency a blessing that makes success easier or is it a trap? I think an argument could be made for both. But you can definitely say it’s a commitment. You have to commit to consistency and persistence. If you don’t make the commitment the momentum will not come. That holds true for every type of business. Even in our Bird Diner.

Outsourcing Creating To One Of Our Creations May 29, 2026 I was reading one of my favorite newsletters today called Oberthinking by Justin Oberman. The article was called “How I use AI To Think Better”. It caught my attention because I’ve been using AI a lot lately to help with the development of a certification program. One of the points he made had to do with using AI to write. Lately I’ve been trying to put into words how AI is affecting people and the way we think and create. A Result I...

It’s The Strategy That Makes You Wealthy May 22, 2026 A word about real estate investing (that is relevant to everything else). Anytime someone makes an investment they have some expectation that the investment will, over time, make them a profit. We invest in real estate because real estate will make you wealthy, right? After all, that’s what all the real estate gurus on YouTube tell us. Here’s the truth. It’s not the real estate that will make you wealthy. It’s the strategy. Most people buy...

Not Everything You’re Delaying Is Procrastination May 16, 2026 This week's newsletter was written by my wife Ericka. She has brought up an important insight on a topic that I thought you needed to hear about because most of us deal with it on a regular basis. The topic of procrastination is something we tend to beat ourselves up on and cause ourselves undue stress frequently. As you will read below, maybe there's another way of thinking about it. I hope this helps someone out there. From The...
