Making It Impossible To Not Buy

Making It Impossible To Not Buy

October 31, 2026

Before I get started with this newsletter issue I need to talk about a new plan for future issues. Sometimes writing weekly on demand can get a little stale for the reader. I have decided to change up my writing schedule. The writer of one of the newsletters I subscribe to decided to write an issue only when he had something useful and helpful to contribute. So instead of a rigid weekly schedule, his newsletter started coming sometimes less frequently; only when he had something useful to say. That's going to be my new schedule as well starting with this issue. I'll publish an issue when I have something useful and helpful. My newsletters will hopefully be of better quality and you will have fewer emails in your inbox. If you have any feedback on that please let me know by replying to this email. Here's my latest issue. Enjoy!

Making It Impossible To Not Buy

Is it really possible for a business to make it impossible to not buy from them? Well, I have to say yes. Almost. The town where I live recently got a Costco. We had never been to a Costco but we have had plenty of experience with Sam’s Club. Definitely not the same thing. We made out first Costco visit a week ago, bought a membership, and spent about 90 minutes exploring the store and buying what we needed. Today we went back looking for a specific item. Unfortunately the item we needed was out of stock. But, instead of leaving we decided to look around again with no real intention of buying anything. Sixty five dollars later we left the store with our stuff. As we were walking through the parking lot with our basket I began to wonder- What just happened? Why did we buy all this stuff?

Being a logical, scientifically minded person, I quickly worked out a formula.

The You Can’t Leave Without Buying Formula

Walking Distance(I’m not doing all that walking for nothing) + Value + Supply + Excitement + Convenience = $$$ales

Most of the good stuff is in the back of the store: meat, the bakery, produce, wine, basically all the fresh food. On the way there you pass by the rest of the canned, bottled, and dry foods. And you pass through all the other cool stuff on the way out. By the time you’ve done all that walking it’s a lot more convenient to just buy the stuff you’ll need for the next week or two than it is to leave and go someplace else later. And while you're at it, you might as well start your Christmas shopping. One thing I noticed is they don’t have any empty shelf space. The item we wanted was sold out but something else was put in its place. There is always some kind of product on the shelf. The value is there because they have quality products at a good price(and lots of free samples).

For most of us we only need 2 or 3 of the items from that formula for our business. We don’t need the walking distance. But whether we sell a product or provide a service, if we give plenty of value, always have the supply when it’s needed, and make it convenient for the customer, the excitement and the sales will come. We don’t have to be Costco. But we can learn some things from them. And I challenge anyone to go to Costco and walk all the way through the store without buying something!

Happy Halloween!
