Working Too Much Or Not Enough?

Working Too Much Or Not Enough?

Do You Work Too Much Or Not Enough?

Are your meat grinder work habits actually pushing you forward making progress? Or are you experiencing diminishing returns on your time(maybe I should say overtime). Do you remember what your kids look like? How about the sound of their voice? If your child walks into the room one day and you notice they suddenly look taller I’m going to say you might want to dial it back a bit.

Quicker Than You Think

Trust me, one day you will wonder where their childhood went when you hear them asking for the keys to the car. Or when they announce you’re going to be a grandparent. I know you’re thinking those days are a long way off. That’s delusional. When it happens it’s too late to get that time back.

There is a legitimate argument for working less, taking daily rest time, spending time with the people you care about, while actually being more productive. Of course there are those that don’t work enough. They need to push themselves a little more and be more productive. It’s difficult to find that balance between the two.

It Is Avoidable

Your mind works better when it’s well rested. It works better when you have spent quality time with the people you care about. And your mind works better when you are happy. Overwork causes stress and stress lowers productivity. Stress causes health problems and will eventually cause you to be unhappy.

A well rested, clear thinking entrepreneur who takes the time to have a tickle war with their five year old and date night with the spouse, will have a healthier business and a happier work environment for their team members. And you’ll have a lot more memories to cherish when you realize your youngest kid just went off to college. And you might just make more money.

Don't Forget To Have Fun!

So this newsletter is intentionally short this week. It’s time for a dinner with my wife and a weekend away from the computer (well almost). So stop reading, turn off your email and your devices and go have some fun. If you don’t have a significant other to spend the weekend with, go find one!

Enjoy your weekend!

That's it for this time. See you next week!

3 Reasons Your Business Isn't Selling May 3, 2025 You’re a small business owner and you want to sell your business. It seems that no matter what you try you are stuck with it. Your exit strategy is failing! Why? What do you do about it? Let’s Back Up A Bit There are a lot of reasons why businesses can’t or don’t sell. I’ve decided to focus on three that I think are among the biggest reasons, and also the easiest to fix. 1. The Business Can’t Run Without You. I wrote about this in a previous...

Your Expertise Is Becoming More Important April 26, 2025 It’s true. Your expertise, your knowledge, and your experience are all becoming more important and more valuable. I was reading Justin Welsh’s newsletter article on how basic content is dying (https://www.justinwelsh.me/newsletter/basic-content-is-dying). I agree with this article. And I have an opinion on the topic as well. We are being flooded with AI generated content to the extent that the content is now largely worthless. If...

Failure Is Not The Problem April 19, 2025 Failure itself is not the problem. It’s what you do after the failure that matters. Many people resist doing something new because of a fear of failure. And then there are those who have the solution to that fear that tell us failure is a good thing because we learn from it. We learn what not to do. I somewhat disagree with this line of thought. We should be concerned about failure. We can learn from it. But, it is something to avoid, not something to...
