The Common Denominator
October 25, 2025
One good thing about publishing your newsletter article 2 days late is that everyone knows it’s not an automated AI generated article that a subscription article platform spits out every seven days like the ones real estate agents use.
So here we are, 2 days late with a human generated article that I hope you will find useful to your business.
Almost Every Time
I have noticed a very predictable pattern in most small businesses, specifically with business owners and their employees. Many clients come to us asking us to “Please fix my team.” And most of those owners who start with that statement will refuse coaching for themselves since "the problem is with their employees." Problems like:
Poor Team Communication
Low Morale
Low Productivity and Performance
High Turnover
Overall People Friction And Chaos
Start At The Top
But is the problem actually with the team? Sometimes it can be. However, 100% of the time there is one common denominator that the owner of the business usually overlooks. You’ve probably already figured out that they can find that common denominator simply by looking in the mirror.
Fixing the team always starts at the top. This might seem kind of off balance but at least half the problem(frequently more than half) is with the owner. They are the common denominator but they can’t see it.
Do you have employees? Are you experiencing those problems I listed above? Start looking at yourself. Do you have leadership experience beyond just having the title? Have you made an effort to learn leadership? I’m not telling you these things because I think I’m better than you. I’m telling you these things because I AM you. Most of the time I get my ideas for an article from the mistakes I’ve made in my past.
All Leaders Are Born But There Are No Born Leaders
Entrepreneurs are not born with leadership abilities. We all have to learn it. Leadership development and personal development are part of being a successful entrepreneur. It just doesn’t work without it. Not only do we as business owners need to develop leadership skills, we have to develop other leaders within our team. Business owners who do not develop those leaders in their teams are the business owners who become overworked and eventually burn out. They become a BOBO (Burned Out Business Owner).
Study leadership. Pursue personal development. Invest in yourself and your team.
