Leadership, Influence, And Mindset
December 19, 2025
When you immerse yourself in someone’s content- books, courses, videos, podcasts, etc., you are absorbing part of their identity into your subconscious mind. I realized that today as I was listening to Russell Brunson explain why he’s been obsessed with old books and documents. It goes back to the idea that leadership is the art of influencing others.
“Leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less.”
John C. Maxwell
I have to admit to being somewhat of a content addict. I frequently fall into the content consumption vortex. I’ll go to YouTube or LinkedIn to look for something or someone very specific. But about 5 seconds into it I’m already distracted by about a gazillion (real number) fascinating videos.
I have found that I have to be very careful what I watch or listen to. There is a quote that I’ve heard fairly often that has been attributed to Jim Rohn.
“You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
That always seemed logical to me but I never really gave it too much deep thought until now. The five people you spend the most time with are just like the people whose content you consume on a daily basis. You are absorbing part of their identity into your subconscious mind. You are spending time with those thought leaders even if it is through video. That influence on your mind is important for your business and you financial momentum.
Your Five
If your five closest associates are all smarter and more successful than you, you will learn and grow. You will likely become more successful. If they are all unreformed felons, drug addicts, and thieves your outlook is not too good. Even if they are none of those things, but they have an attitude of always being negative or always blaming everyone else for their problems and never taking responsibility for their own situation, if you don’t get away from them their attributes will become part of your identity. You will become them.
It's 90% - Really
I firmly believe your mindset is responsible for at least 90% of your success (or lack of success). Mindsets are contagious. You absorb some of the mindset attributes of your inner circle of five. I have had some friends and family members I’ve limited my time with because of the victim mindset, the blaming mindset, and the pessimist mindset. When I find myself exhibiting those traits I have to tell myself to stop. And of course sometimes my wife does that for me.
All this is to say your mind is your most valuable asset. If your mind were an airplane and you were the pilot, your mindset would be the autopilot. If you feed that autopilot the wrong information it will take you places you never wanted to go. Give it the right information and it will take you to all the places you’ve always dreamed of going.
Next week is Christmas. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! Because of travel plans the day after Christmas the next issue will either be an abbreviated issue or possibly a reissue of a previously published article.
