Don't Forget About Living
October 19, 2024
Yesterday my wife and I went to the grocery store to pick up a few things. At the checkout counter we noticed a box of candy bars right in front of us next to the pay terminal. That prompted a discussion and the guy checking us out, who apparently was an avid reader, began to tell us about the statistics he had studied on morbid obesity in the U.S. He told us they started putting candy on the check out counter because they are not selling very well. A substantial portion of their customers are becoming more health conscious.
That caused some thinking about how we have been living lately. We have been trying to live a healthier life, eating organic foods, exercise, trying to remove sugar from our diet, etc. It happens that for the last few weeks we’ve been planning a small live leadership event that we do annually. It’s coming up in one week. It’s always a stressful time for us and this year has been no exception.
Remember To Have Fun
One of the things I enjoy about owning our own business is the freedom we have for the little things. Choosing our own time for lunch, sleeping late if I need to (I’m not a morning person), and being spontaneous.
Lately we have forgotten about being spontaneous. So we had a different day today. I’m telling this to make a point. I’m not one of those guys who gives out nonsense daily routines that “will make you successful.” If only it were that easy!
We went to our favorite lunch venue and then a trip to the post office. Leaving the post office I noticed a specialty ice cream shop across the street. The Roll Shack makes ice cream that’s flattened out on a cold surface and rolled up like a tortilla. It’s almost as fun to watch as it is to eat.
We decided it was time for living. Ignore the sugar and how unhealthy it is. This was for relieving stress and pure enjoyment. And we did enjoy it. Then we came home and got some serious work done in a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Take A Break
My point is this. Take a break. Don’t forget to live. We have not been doing that lately and it has affected our business. Sometimes the best way to build some momentum in your business and your life is to have some fun along the way. Spend more time with your family and friends.
Tonight we’re making homemade pizza and I’m going to have my annual beer. You read that right. I rarely drink but I manage to have one beer every year. And tomorrow night it’s a birthday party for my wife’s grandson. Next week we’ll be back to the normal routine for a while. If you can call putting on a live event normal.
There’s a habit that I used to have that we are going to get back to. I highly recommend it. Work hard most of the year and take several short vacations. A short trip of 2 to 4 days, five or six times a year is a great way to keep the business going and still have periods of rest and relaxation to recharge.
Go do something spontaneous this weekend. It will do wonders for your mind and probably for your business. This really is a financial decision. Have some fun. Monday is only 2 days away!
