Would You Give Up A Year Of Your Life?

Would You Give Up A Year Of Your Life?

March 22, 2025

Would you give up a year of your life to be successful? I’m not talking about shortening your life. Would you be willing to spend the next year of your life totally focused on your business? Would you stop doing the things in your life that don’t move you forward?

Of course some things like family, faith, and rest and relaxation move us forward and provide a return in ways that are difficult to quantify, but they are essential.

My wife and I were having a discussion recently on the Pareto Principle also known as the 80/20 rule. 20% of your activities produce 80% or your returns. There is a saying in real estate that holds true most of the time- “80% of the deals are done by 20% of the agents.” If you look at an organization’s sales you will likely find that roughly 80% of the sales come from 20% of the customers and also, 80% of the sales are generated by 20% of the sales team.

What Are You Willing To Do

So the question becomes- What are you willing to do with the 80% of your activities that only produce 20% of your returns? Would you be willing to do away with most or all of those activities? What constitutes an acceptable return on your activities? What about the sales people that only generate 20% of the sales? Getting rid of 80% of the people whether sales people or customers is probably not the answer. People can be trained to sell and your message can be changed to be clearer and more appealing to your ideal customer.

Consider What Moves Your Business Forward

For me the 80% of my activities that produce only 20% of the results is filled with a lot of distractions. As I discussed in a previous article, these distractions are my biggest business expense. Am I willing to focus on the 20% for the next year? Yes. But the challenge is keeping that focus going. Doing that will produce tremendous leaps forward for my business. Where most people fail at this is they tend to slip back into old habits. The comfort of their old routines takes over and the distractions kick in. Progress declines.

The first step is to identify your 20% and your 80%. Determine what you can focus on and what is not moving you forward that you can get rid of. It can be a tricky process and will probably involve a lot of thought and likely a lot of pain. But I believe there are a lot of businesses that no longer exist because they never made the effort to focus on their 20%.

It's Not Easy

The Pareto Principle is simple but it’s not always easy. It can be difficult to put into practice. If you can do this for a year I believe your business will make amazing progress. Start by trying it for 60 to 90 days. See what happens. Call it a trial period where you can make adjustments and try different things.

We will be putting this to work in our business. I’ll provide periodic updates on our progress in future articles. Try it for yourself and let me know how it goes!

Failure Is Not The Problem April 19, 2025 Failure itself is not the problem. It’s what you do after the failure that matters. Many people resist doing something new because of a fear of failure. And then there are those who have the solution to that fear that tell us failure is a good thing because we learn from it. We learn what not to do. I somewhat disagree with this line of thought. We should be concerned about failure. We can learn from it. But, it is something to avoid, not something to...

Hit The Reset Button April 5, 2025 Hit The Reset Button If you have ever called an IT person you have probably been told to use this fix a million times when asking for help with your computer- “Turn your computer off and back on again.” That cleared up a lot of problems. Older PCs had a reset button. Most computers today no longer have a reset button. Some do but you have to know where to look. The reset button restarts the system with a single button push and it was usually used when the...
